The future of project cargo is uncertain all over the world and the Baltic Sea region is no exception. At the same time, however, the BSR still has major potential and possibilities to develop this type of freight.
Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Norway have one of the most developed infrastructure for transporting and handling project cargo. What is more, national governments are planning to develop the communication network between these countries even further. A perfect example is the Fehmarn Belt link – a major transport infrastructure project which will connect Germany (Puttgarden) and Denmark (Rødby). The project is estimated at USD 6.1bn (at 2008 prices) and will consist of a 19 km link which will include an electrified, double-track railway and a four-lane motorway. The investment is set for 2018 and will be headed by the Danish government.
